Merkinė Bridge

Merkinė Bridge

The bridge Merkinė is a bridge over the Memel in the town Merkinė in which varėna district municipality , in the southwest of Lithuania . It is about 210 meters long. The bridge is located on KK133 Street (Merkinė- Leipalingis ). In the Merkinė district inventory from 1693 to 1695, it was stated that the ferry was operated by two men across the river (Memel). A wooden bridge was later mentioned in a document on Grodno Street. In 1914 the bridge was built over the Memel near Merkinė. When the Russians withdrew during the First World War, they burned the bridge they had built themselves in 1915. From 1915 to 1916 the bridge was built by the German soldiers. Construction began in winter, the wooden stakes were fixed after the holes had been cut in the ice. The main repair of the bridge was carried out in Soviet Lithuania in 1960 .
