Leipalingis is a place in the extreme south of Lithuania in the Druskininkai municipality . According to a census in 2011, Leipalingis has 1,552 inhabitants.

location

Leipalingis is located in the south of Lithuania, near the border with the southern neighboring state of Belarus . The regionally important city of Alytus is located just under 50 kilometers northwest of Leipalingis .

history

Before the Second World War, Leipalingis housed a noteworthy Jewish community with around 150 members. In the summer of 1941, on behalf of the police chief of the city of Alytus, the Jewish population was arrested and locked in the synagogue. After the Hamann Roll Command moved into the city on September 11, 1941 , the execution of the Jews near the Catholic cemetery began, killing 155 people.

Commemoration

A memorial stone today commemorates the victims of the Holocaust in Leipalingis. In addition, a memorial site with photos and the names of the victims was set up in January 2018, and the Israeli ambassador was present at the opening .
