The two bridgehead buildings were built in neoclassical style according to plans by the architect Roderich Fick between 1940 and 1943 and are part of the monumental design of the banks of the Danube in Linz during the Nazi era . The previous buildings on the main square and parts of Bad- and Adlergasse, Upper and Lower Danube Lands were demolished in 1938/39. This is closely related to the construction of the Nibelungen Bridge and the raising of the street level of the northern main square.

The buildings are approximately symmetrical and each have arcades to Adlergasse (east) and Badgasse (west). Some of the interior of the buildings was not completed until after 1945. Originally, neo-baroque stucco elements were planned for the facade as an adaptation to the baroque ensemble of the main square, but these were not implemented.

From 2015 to 2018 the buildings will be renovated and the top floor will be redesigned.

Erich Ruprecht's siren fountain from 1956 is located in the second courtyard of the bridgehead building west, and there is also a fountain in the courtyard of the east building.

Both buildings were originally equipped with a paternoster lift each (the only ones in Upper Austria). When the art university moved in around 1980, the one in the west building was taken out of service and replaced by a conventional lift; later the one in the east building was also replaced.

use

The Red-White-Red transmitter , later the ORF , the city art collections ( Neue Galerie, Gurlitt Collection ) and the city archive were housed in the bridgehead building West . Today it houses the Kunstuni Linz, a pharmacy and a textile shop in the arcades.
