Under the founding name Brügelmann , a bicycle shop was founded in Frankfurt am Main in 1932 , which later became the most important mail order company for bicycle parts and bicycles in Germany. The company last trading under the name Brügelmann Fahrrad GmbH Fahrradversand had to file for bankruptcy in 2009. The trademark and name rights were subsequently acquired by Internetstores GmbH, which now continues an online bicycle trade under the name Brügelmann in its own name.

History of the family company Brügelmann

The Brügelmann company was founded in 1932 and until 2009 was managed by Manfred Brügelmann, the son of the company founder, as a GmbH . Brügelmann was regarded as the "pioneer of bicycle mail order companies" and until the 1990s was the largest mail order company for cycling in Germany and one of the largest in the world. The mail order company , which regularly sent out an extensive catalog to customers, had 50 employees at times. The range mainly comprised bikes and components for bike racing and touring riders . Everyday bicycles were hardly offered. The shop, which was operated until the end, was initially in Frankfurt am Main-Bockenheim, later a larger complex in Sulzbach near Frankfurt with a large exhibition area was moved into.

In the time before the mountain bike boom, Brügelmann was an important supplier for recreational cyclists and professional teams. Brügelmann had a reputation for having spare parts in stock that other suppliers could not deliver, which was due, among other things, to the family's personal contacts with the relevant manufacturers. You could also have parts sent to you anywhere in the world, as a registered customer a phone call or a postcard was all that was needed. For long-distance cyclists, this was often the only way to get special spare parts. In addition, a large part of the manufacturer-specific special tools had to be acquired in order to be able to carry out your own work.

A detailed spare parts catalog was published annually, which German bicycle shops liked to use as a reference price list and, because of the extensive tables, as a reference work. Brügelmann was also the main sponsor of the long Radbundesliga and the Federal German cyclists . In the course of this, there were many articles with their own advertising slogans, such as B. Bottles, jerseys and towels. Most of the items were also available to customers to purchase.

Most recently, Manfred Brügelmann shared management with co-managing director Torsten Hildebrand. Since the developments in the field of mountain bikes and later in the field of Internet shipping were not followed and observed as consistently as by competitors, the company ran into economic difficulties. Another reason was suspected to be the inadequate turnover of goods: "A warehouse with innumerable boxes, index cards and a thick catalog are no longer in keeping with the times (in the age of the Internet)". In the autumn of 2009, an application was made to the Frankfurt am Main district court to initiate insolvency proceedings and, by resolution of October 7, 2009, the lawyer Holger Lessing was appointed (provisional) insolvency administrator. At the beginning of 2014, the Frankfurt District Court announced that it intended to discontinue the insolvency proceedings due to lack of assets under Section 211 of the Insolvency Code (InsO).

Continuation of the name Brügelmann as a bicycle mail order business

On April 1, 2010, Internetstores GmbH from Esslingen am Neckar took over the trademark rights to the Radsport Brügelmann brand from the insolvency administrator and operates an online bicycle shop, legally in its own name, at the old address bruegelmann.de.

Brügelmann owned a number of own brands in the course of its history. The company had frames manufactured and sold them exclusively through its own mail order business. This currently includes the Votec brand . The Brügelmann brothers' own Barellia brand was discontinued after the bankruptcy.
