Bramarbas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

" Bramarbas or the boastful officer" is the German title of the Danish comedy Jakob von Tyboe by the writer Ludvig Holberg .

The expression "bramarbasieren" for "show off, show off" goes back to him. The translation and the title come from Johann Christoph Gottsched , who published it in his Deutsche Schaubühne in 1741 . The origin of the word is not known, it may be related to the Spanish "bramar", which means "roar, rave". In today's common sense, “bramarbasieren” appeared for the first time in 1751 in Christian Fürchtegott Gellert's letters of taste .
