The Brandenburg Rescue Medal was donated by the President of the Brandenburg State Parliament on February 14, 2003. Since then, it has been regarded as state recognition of rescue acts in the state of Brandenburg.

Award requirements

The rescue medal can only be awarded to people who have rescued people from mortal danger at their own risk or who have averted an imminent significant danger from the general public and who have shown a special degree of courage and sacrifice . In addition, the person to be honored must also be worthy of state recognition . In cases in which a rescue act or attempt at rescue took place with courageous and self-sacrificing commitment, but the conditions for awarding the rescue medal are not met or the rescue act has not been successful, a public commendation can be given instead of the rescue medal; A rescue medal can also be awarded for outstanding work. State recognition can be given for rescue acts in the state of Brandenburg, regardless of the rescuer's place of residence, and for rescue acts outside of the state of Brandenburg, if the rescuer or the rescued person is resident in the state of Brandenburg.

In addition to these two state awards, a cash reward can also be granted if the budget is available. It comes into consideration when the rescuer is economically needy. It can also be granted as compensation for substantial voluntary or compulsory expenses by the rescuer, which are causally related to the rescue act or for significant property damage suffered as a result of the rescue act. In addition to the state award, young people under the age of 18 receive a wristwatch with a dedication as a gift.

Disclaimer

The rescue medal cannot be awarded to people who are entrusted with protecting the lives of others or who are responsible for their work or business to avert threats to the general public. They can only be granted state recognition if they have significantly exceeded their service or work duties during the underlying rescue act .

Award practice

The Minister of the Interior always decides on the awarding of the rescue medal, the granting of a public commendation, the granting of a monetary reward or compensation for expenses and property damage and the granting of a gift in kind to young people. He also hands over these honors personally, whereby he can also transfer this award right to other people. With the consent of the rescuer, the award will be announced in the official gazette for the state of Brandenburg. Neither the rescued person nor a third party may be made aware of the award of a cash reward and its amount.

Withdrawal and withdrawal of the award

If the holder of the rescue medal proves to be unworthy of the award due to his later behavior, in particular as a result of a dishonorable criminal act, or if such behavior becomes known afterwards, the authority to wear the rescue medal can be withdrawn from him. He can be heard before the withdrawal.

Posthumous award

If the rescuer has lost his life in a causal connection with the rescue act, he can be awarded the rescue medal after his death. In this case, the rescue medal and award certificate are given to the bereaved.

Subsequent recognitions

Rescue acts in the state of Brandenburg, which had already been recognized by a state honor before the Rescue Act came into force, can subsequently be confirmed by awarding the rescue medal according to this law.

Appearance, texture and way of wearing

The silver rescue medal has a diameter of 33 mm and shows the embossed coat of arms of Brandenburg in the middle on its front . Underneath it is a semicircle in capital letters: BRANDENBURG . The reverse shows the inscription in the middle: FOR RESCUE FROM DANGER . The rescue medal is worn on a red-white-red band, which is 25 mm wide on the upper left side of the chest. The rescue medal includes a miniature that is 11 mm tall and can be worn on a red-white-red strap buckle 25 mm wide and 15 mm high, also on the upper left side of the chest. The rescue medal and the award document become the property of the borrower when they are handed over. The surviving dependents are not obliged to return them.

Others

Before the official foundation of the Brandenburg Rescue Medal, rescuers were only honored with a certificate, a letter of thanks and a gift in kind. The Brandenburg Rescue Medal can also be awarded to rescuers if the rescue act has failed. Instead of the historical orange and white rescue medals of other federal states, the medal is worn on a ribbon in the traditional state colors of red and white. The medal is presented in a red box with the Brandenburg state coat of arms in gold on the front.
