Bream (unit)

Brasse is one of the old measures on the island of Bourbon before the introduction of the new French. It was a measure of length and corresponded to the thread . Seafaring was the application of the measure . The thread had three different values:

  • Small thread or buisen thread 1 bream = 5 pieds = 1.6242 meters
  • Koopwardersfaden 1 bream = 5 ½ pieds
  • Large thread 1 bream = 6 feet (Rhineland)
  • Mauritius 1 bream = 1.6242 meters

In Basel (Switzerland) it was a measure of length and corresponded to the small cubit .
