The Brauchwiki (own name: consumption wiki ) is a free, German Internet encyclopedia that deals with customs .
History of the project
The idea was developed by employees of the media laboratory and the European ethnology / folklore department at the University of Augsburg . The Bavarian Ministry of Culture took over the patronage . The project manager is the graduate geographer Margaretha Schweiger-Wilhelm, who works as a lecturer at the University of Augsburg. The originally student project is now established as an interdisciplinary research project at the University of Augsburg. The site went online on May 1, 2009. The Bavarian State Association for Home Care eV and the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation act as partners in the project.

Brauchwiki offers a platform for everyone who is interested in customs and specifically wants to learn something about them. Registered authors are able to create their own articles as well as to incorporate images, videos and audio files. Since the articles are checked by experts, a high scientific standard is always given. Nevertheless, the principle of swarm intelligence is also in the foreground in this project . On the main page there are the sections "Do you already know ...?" And a timeline for the current customs. In order to maintain clarity, a system of categorization was introduced in the needwiki. The user can now assign the individual customs to specific areas (e.g. religious customs, customs in the course of the year or in the life cycle, etc.) or regions. This increases the clarity and provides additional information. Another special feature is the “Dr. Custom ". A team of scientists from various Bavarian universities answers questions that the virtual character “Dr. Custom "can be made. You can also see which customs are most popular and which are most often clicked on. Brauchwiki has around 200 registered visitors and just as many articles (January 2011).
