Bravonium

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bravonium (also Branogenium ) was a Roman settlement in Britain . The place was at the intersection of major roads under what is now Leintwardine in the county of Herefordshire .

The place was founded around 70 AD and initially had a purely civil character. Buildings were mainly found along the main street. Around 160 AD this settlement was overbuilt by a military camp , which was 262 × 154 m in size and was protected by a rampart. The civilian settlement then continued to exist to the south outside the camp and then also within the fortifications when the military camp was abandoned around 196. The place was destroyed by fire in the fourth century and not repopulated for a long time.

A consecration stone that was found in the place is dedicated to Jupiter . Remnants of a bathing facility could be excavated.

The place is mentioned several times in classical ancient sources (by Claudius Ptolemy , in the Itinerarium Antonini and by the geographer of Ravenna ). Ptolemy proves that the place was under the rule of the Ordovicians .
