Breakthru is a rock song by the British rock band Queen . It appeared on the album The Miracle in 1989 . Released as the second single, the song reached number 7 in the UK, number 4 in the Netherlands and number 6 in Ireland. The title is also featured on the 1991 compilation album Greatest Hits II .

song

The song, produced by Queen and David Richards , begins with a 34-second, slow, vocal and piano-oriented intro, which Freddie Mercury originally composed for another, never completed song. The intro ends abruptly in the second part of the song, written by Roger Taylor . The piano first gives way to a bass-supported, rising rhythm, which merges with the incursion of Mercury's vocals and synthesizers into a rocky, swift arrangement, later shaped by Brian May's guitar playing. The text, which expresses general feelings and interests of the singer in relation to a second person (honey), regularly ends in the title of the song, Breakthru , the "last breakthrough" or (in a metaphorical sense) the breakthrough from rain to sunshine :

Breakthru, yeah, to the sunshine from the rain .

In the chorus it says again:

If I could only reach you
If I could make you smile
If I could only reach you
That would really be a breakthru .

The text also contains slightly ironic passages:

I get religion quick
'Cos you're looking divine .
(I immediately get religious because you look so divine.)

The song ends after an aggressive solo by Brian May that matches the song and a repeated refrain with a revival of the bass-dominated theme.

Video

The music video initially shows a masked woman during the intro, played by Roger Taylor's then partner Debbie Leng. At the beginning of the second part of the song, matching the sung Breakthru , a steam locomotive with the inscription "Miracle Express" breaks through a brick wall. Based on live performances, you can see the four band members playing together on the platform of the railway wagon.

The clip was filmed in two days by Rudi Dolezal and Hannes Rossacher ( DoRo ) on the Nene Valley Railway in Cambridgeshire .

With the train traveling between 30 and 60 mph and being shot on an open wagon, the band members were insured for £ 2 million in case something happened to them.
