Stamp capsule money

Postage stamp capsule money is emergency money with the face value of the postage stamp , which is located under transparent or advertising covers or cut-outs. Most of the stamp capsule money served as a substitute for change.

The encased postvage stamps , which were created by J. Gault in New York in 1862, are the oldest stamp capsule money . It is a metal plate bent at the top, which ends with a plate, underneath is the postage stamp. Advertising text was engraved on the back of the metal.

Especially after the First World War , such capsules were issued in Germany , Austria and France ( timbres jetons ). Such substitute money has also recently been used in Italy, for example. Usually the capsules were made from celluloid .
