BNFL employed 23,000 people in 16 countries.

In 1998, BNFL took over the nuclear division Westinghouse Electric Company from Westinghouse Electric Corporation and renamed it Westinghouse Electric Company . On February 6, 2006, the Japanese group Toshiba signed a contract with BNFL after Toshiba acquired 100 percent of BNFL USA Group Inc. and Westinghouse Electric UK Limited and thus the nuclear division of BNFL for US $ 5.4 billion. This made Toshiba the world's largest manufacturer of nuclear power plants. At the end of March 2017, the Westinghouse Electric Company filed for bankruptcy in order to avoid further effects on the parent company Toshiba. Several rescue plans had previously failed, whereupon the company postponed the balance sheet presentation several times.
