Nuclear Decommissioning Authority
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority ( NDA ; German authority for the decommissioning of nuclear facilities ) oversees the decommissioning, cleaning and dismantling of certain nuclear facilities in Great Britain . According to an Energy Act passed in 2004 , the agency was established on April 1, 2005. It has taken ownership of the facilities provided for this purpose, while the necessary work is usually carried out by other organizations and companies.
The agency is located in Westlakes Science & Technology Park , near the north-east English port city of Whitehaven .
In addition, the NDA is the owner of the British railway company Direct Rail Services , which, among other things, handles the transport of radioactive material.
Facilities of the NDA
The plants under the supervision of the NDA are:
- the locations of the British Nuclear Group , a subsidiary of British Nuclear Fuels . These include part of the extensive facilities in Sellafield , the uranium enrichment in Capenhurst and the Drigg repository .
- the fuel assembly plant operated by Westinghouse Electric Company , also a subsidiary of British Nuclear Fuels plc, in Springfields near Preston .
- all eleven UK Magnox reactors :
- Calder Hall near Whitehaven , Cumbria - four blocks with 50 MW capacity each , commissioned in 1956, closed in 2003
- Chapelcross near Annan , Dumfriesshire - four units with 50 MW each, commissioned in 1959, shut down in 2003
- Berkeley near the town of the same name in Gloucestershire - two units with an output of 138 MW each, commissioned in 1962, closed in 1989
- Bradwell near Southminster, Essex - two units with 121 MW each, commissioned in 1962, shut down in 2002
- Hunterston A near Fairlie , North Ayrshire - two blocks with 160 MW each, commissioned in 1964, closed in 1990
- Hinkley Point A near Bridgwater , Somerset - two units with 235 MW each, commissioned in 1965, shut down in 2000
- Trawsfynydd near the town of the same name in Gwynedd - two units with 195 MW each, commissioned in 1965, shutdown in 1991
- Dungeness A near the town of the same name in Kent - two units with 219 MW each, commissioning in 1966, shutdown in 2006
- Sizewell A near Leiston, Suffolk - two units with 210 MW each, commissioned in 1966, decommissioned in 2006
- Oldbury near Thornbury , South Gloucestershire - two units with 217 MW each, commissioned in 1968; Shutdown of block A2 in June 2011, block A1 in February 2012
- Wylfa on the island of Anglesey - two units with an output of 490 MW each, commissioned in 1971, the last unit closed in 2015
