The Sizewell nuclear power plant is located near the fishing village of Sizewell in County Suffolk in England and consists of the two plants Sizewell A and Sizewell B.

Sizewell A

The Sizewell A plant consists of two Magnox reactors with a total installed capacity of 420  MW . The thermal output is 1000 MW. The first network synchronization took place for both blocks in 1966.

Both reactors were shut down at the end of 2006 after 40 years of operation for economic reasons. The dismantling will cost an estimated £ 1.2 billion.

Sizewell B

Sizewell B is the only pressurized water reactor in the UK. It was built between 1988 and 1995 and was projected for a net output of 1188 MW. In 2005, the thermal output increased by 1% to 3479 MWt and thus an increase in the net output to 1195 MWe, although this depends on the seawater temperature.

This block is to be Template: future / in 5 yearsshut down in 2035 .

Sizewell C

Since the sale of British Energy to Électricité de France (EDF) in February 2009, there have been more concrete plans for a new power plant with two reactors in Sizewell. There is already an agreement on site for the grid connection for a new nuclear power plant. The planned term is 60 years. The government then estimated that the two 1,600 MW reactors, together with the planned units at Hinkley Point , would provide around 13% of the UK's electricity needs. EDF planned to use Areva's EPR design for all new nuclear power plants in the UK. Similar power plants are currently being built in Finland , France and China .

On October 18, 2010, the British government named Sizewell one of eight suitable locations for new nuclear power plants.

The operator Électricité de France and the Chinese company CGN signed contracts for the development of Sizewell C in September 2016. The construction was officially applied for in May 2020.
