The former Winfrith nuclear power station is located near Winfrith , Dorset in the UK . It was in operation from 1968 to 1990. The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) was the owner and operator of the nuclear power plant .

reactor

The Winfrith nuclear power plant consisted of a light water cooled and heavy water moderated reactor of the type SGHWR ( Steam Generating Heavy Water Reactor ) with a net electrical output of 92 MWe and a gross output of 100 MWe. This nuclear reactor was in operation and remains the only one of its type to this day. At the European Commission it was listed as a "large power reactor".

Commissioning / shutdown

Construction of the Winfrith nuclear power station began on May 1, 1963. The reactor was first synchronized with the power grid on December 1, 1967 and went into commercial operation on January 1, 1968. It supplied a total of 10,957 gigawatt hours of electricity for the commercial power grid for over 22 years until it was finally shut down on September 11, 1990.

Important decommissioning work has been carried out since the reactor was shut down in 1990. The reactor is to be shut down for good by 2017.

Previous progress of the dismantling:

  • Removal of the fuel assemblies and drainage of the reactor
  • Dismantling of the administration building
  • Maintenance and care of the plant before the final demolition

Originally, the decommissioning work was supposed to take over 100 years. In the meantime, however, this plan has been revised.
