Berkeley was one of the first British nuclear power stations and is located near Berkeley (Gloucestershire) , England in Great Britain on the east bank of the Severn . The power plant area is 27 hectares. The power plant has been shut down and is in the dismantling phase. The owner is the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority , operated by Magnox Electric Limited .

history

Berkeley Nuclear Power Plant
Entrance to the Berkeley Nuclear Power Plant

It was the first nuclear power plant in Britain to be built for commercial purposes only. Construction began on the two reactor blocks on January 1, 1957.

Construction of the laboratories began in 1959 and construction was completed in 1960.

On June 12, 1962, the first reactor block was synchronized with the power grid for the first time and went into commercial operation on the same day. On June 24, 1962, the second reactor block was synchronized with the power grid for the first time, and on October 20, 1962 it too went into commercial operation.
On October 26, 1988, the second reactor block was shut down. The first block followed on March 31, 1989. After 27 years of successful operation, the power plant was shut down. It was the world's first nuclear power plant of this type to be shut down for good.

In 1992, the removal of the spent fuel elements from the power plant, which had continued since 1989, was completed. Since the design of the reactors is different from all other Magnox reactors, more extensive decommissioning work is necessary.
The fuel elements were transported away, the cooling ponds were drained and cleaned, and the turbine hall was dismantled and demolished. The dismantling has been going on for sixteen years. 84,877 spent fuel elements were brought to Sellafield - defueling was completed 14 weeks before the scheduled 1992 deadline. The Cesium Removal Plant (CRP) has been shut down.

There are the following operational and shutdown steps:

  • 1962-1992 : The plant operates and is the first UK Magnox power plant to be decommissioned.
  • 1992-2011 : Only the reactor buildings remain during the decommissioning work. The Cesium Removal Plant is shut down.
  • 2011-2074Template: future / in 5 years : All other structures will be dismantled. However, the buildings are still monitored and maintained. Passively packaged waste will be removed from the site.
  • 2074 Template: future / in 5 years-2,083Template: future / in 5 years : All buildings and facilities are reduced. The experiences from this are to be used for the dismantling of all other Magnox power plants. All waste is sent to a specially built facility on site. All radiological waste is removed. Non-hazardous waste from the demolished buildings is recycled and prepared for reuse on the construction site as far as possible.

Reactors

The two reactors are first generation Magnox reactors in the UK. They have a net output of 138  MWe and a gross output of 166 MWe. Each reactor had 3,275 fuel channels, and each channel contained 13 fuel assemblies. There were 132 control sticks included. The reactors were operated with natural uranium. The reactor coolant was carbon dioxide (CO 2 ).

The location on the east bank of the Severn was chosen because such an unlimited supply of cooling water was available. The electricity generated was enough to supply a large city like Bristol . There are currently 209 employees in the power plant.

Data of the reactor blocks
