The Wylfa Nuclear Power Plant is located west of Cemaes Bay on the island of Anglesey in north Wales in the United Kingdom .

History and technical data

The nuclear power plant comprises two Magnox reactors with an installed capacity of 490  MW each ("Wylfa-1" and "Wylfa-2"). Construction began in 1963 and commissioned in 1971.

The nuclear power plant was operated by Magnox Electric Limited and is owned by the British Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA, the German authority for the decommissioning of nuclear facilities ). It was originally supposed to be shut down in 2010 for economic reasons.

On April 25, 2012, Wylfa-2 went offline five days earlier than planned due to an unplanned downtime and was no longer started up. After the power plant operator received the approval to use the partially used nuclear fuel rods from the Wylfa 2 reactor in the Wylfa 1 reactor and the production of the Magnox fuel elements had expired, Wylfa 1 was originally supposed to continue operating until September 30, 2014. For a further extension of the term until December 2015, further security checks were necessary, which were completed in September 2014. On December 30, 2015, Wylfa-1 was the last of the UK's Magnox reactors to be shut down.

Planned new power plant

Two boiling water reactors with an output of 3,100 MW were to be built at the Wylfa site; commissioning was planned for 2027. Hitachi Ltd. put plans to build the reactors on hold in January 2019.
