The decommissioned Bradwell Nuclear Power Plant is located at Bradwell Waterside on the Dengie Peninsula , Essex in the UK . The nuclear power plant consisted of two reactors of the Magnox-type with a total installed capacity of 292  MWe . Like the Dounreay nuclear power plant , it was built on the edge of an airfield from the Second World War. The plant was shut down in 2002. The ongoing demolition is taking place under the supervision of the new owner since 2004, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority , the last operator being British Nuclear Fuels .

Location

The power plant is located on the Dengie Peninsula at the mouth of the River Blackwater . The location was chosen because the land had a low agricultural value, is easily accessible and there is enough cooling water from the North Sea .

Bradwell is one of the possible sites selected by British Energy for a new generation of nuclear reactors.

history

The Bradwell nuclear power plant consisted of two Magnox reactors with a net electrical output of 123 MWe each and a gross electrical output of 146 MWe each. Construction of both reactors began on January 1, 1957. The Bradwell 1 reactor was first synchronized with the power grid on July 1, 1962 and went into commercial operation on the same day. Bradwell 2 was synchronized with the network on July 6, 1962 and went into commercial operation on November 12, 1962.

In 1966, twenty natural uranium fuel rods were stolen from Bradwell.

Bradwell was operated by the state Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) until 1989 and switched to Nuclear Electric after a partial privatization. Bradwell operated under the new company name Magnox Electric from 1994 to 1998 and was owned by British Nuclear Fuels between 1998 and 2004. In 1999 it was announced that the power plant would be shut down in 2002.

On June 1, 2001, Magnox Electric pleaded guilty to unauthorized releases of low-level radioactive waste at Bradwell and Hinkley Point A on six counts and was sentenced to £ 100,000 and over £ 28,000 in damages. The Bradwell 2 reactor was shut down on March 30, 2002, with the first unit following a day later. Following the restructuring of the UK nuclear industry in 2004, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority became the new owner, overseeing Magnox South's demolition of the facility. The last fuel element in reactor 2 was brought to Sellafield for reprocessing in December 2005 .

On February 17, 2009, Magnox Electric was found guilty by a Chelmsford Crown Court jury of radioactive effluent seepage from a decontamination sump between 1990 and 2004, fined £ 250,000 and in damages of £ 150,000.
