British Energy was one of the largest power generation companies in the UK and was listed on the FTSE 100 index . British Energy owned eight nuclear power plants in Great Britain and the Eggborough coal-fired power plant . The seat of the company was the Scottish city of East Kilbride . British Energy was founded in 1995 to operate the UK's eight most modern nuclear power plants. In 1996 British Energy was privatized. British Energy was acquired on September 24, 2008 by EDF Energy , a subsidiary of Électricité de France (EDF), for £ 12.5 billion. The transaction was finalized in February 2009.

EDF sold 20 percent to the British energy group Centrica (the parent company of British Gas ) in the summer of 2009 .
