The Torness Nuclear Power Plant is located eight kilometers southeast of Dunbar in East Lothian , Scotland , UK .

Construction of the nuclear power plant began in 1980. It consists of two EGRs with a total installed electrical output of 1364  MW , which went into operation in 1988 and 1989.

The plant is owned and operated by EDF Energy, a subsidiary of Électricité de France .

history

In November 1999, collapsed Panavia Tornado of the Royal Air Force after an engine damage less than one kilometer near the plant into the sea. The British Ministry of Defense praised the two pilots (for demonstrating "exceptional levels of airmanship and awareness in the most adverse of conditions"); they only triggered the ejection seats after it was clear that the plane would not hit the buildings.

In August 2006 there was a shutdown after "seaweed" (seaweed, seaweed) completely blocked the main intake opening for seawater. Both reactors were shut down within 70 minutes of the first indicators.

As part of the deregulation of the UK power generation market, Torness became the property of the state-owned company Scottish Nuclear . This company was part of British Energy . In 2008 British Energy was taken over by EDF Energy, a subsidiary of Électricité de France , which today is the owner and operator of the plant. It is scheduled to Template: future / in 3 yearsoperate until 2023 .

In June 2011, both reactors went offline due to a jellyfish plague.
