Main building of the Stadthauptmannshof in Mölln

The Stadthauptmannshof in Mölln is a building in the style of the brick renaissance .

history

The Stadthauptmannshof was the seat and residence of the governor of Lübeck in the city of Mölln until the pledged city was returned to the Dukes of Saxony-Lauenburg based on a decision by the Imperial Court of Justice in 1683. The governor was directly subordinate to the Lübeck council and practiced for it on site the executive and lower jurisdiction.

The listed building complex was rebuilt around 1550 on behalf of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck , which had taken Mölln into its administration as a pledge since 1359 . Here the Lübeck Vogt (city governor) had his residence and administrative seat in the strategically important city for Lübeck on the Stecknitz Canal and Alter Salzstrasse . Previously, the Möllner residential courtyard of the Dukes of Saxony-Lauenburg was located here.

Lübeck coat of arms

The two-story main building made of brick has a very high, representative ground floor, which is set off from the strikingly lower upper floor by a brick frieze. The gable roof is hipped to the north. Above the entrance with its arched portal there are two medallions with coats of arms made of sandstone and an inscription plaque.

The buildings grouped around an inner courtyard were used as school buildings for the Pestalozzi School in the 20th century . From 1870 to 1934 the Mölln District Court was located in the Stadthauptmannshof. Since the last renovation, it has now served as a cultural center and seat of the Duchy of Lauenburg Foundation .
