Rugiland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rugiland is the historical name for an area around Krems in Lower Austria north of the Danube that encompasses the eastern Waldviertel and western Weinviertel . The name goes back to the Rugier , an East Germanic people related to the Goths , who settled the country from 453 to 488.

The name is passed down from the Origo Gentis Langobardorum , the legend of the Longobards who temporarily settled the area. The name Rugiland can still be found in some chronicles afterwards, but was no longer in use from the end of the early Middle Ages.
