Broadfield Hospital

Broadfield Hospital is a former hospital in the Scottish city of Port Glasgow in Inverclyde . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

The construction of the manor house began in 1869 and the work was completed the following year. In 1925, Broadfield Hospital was established in the building, a psychiatric facility for male patients. Four years later, the Burgh Paisley acquired the associated Broadstone House and used it as a psychiatric facility for female patients. Both houses were managed together. In the 1980s the facility was closed.

Due to bomb damage from World War II , cracks in the masonry and inclinations of walls were reported in 1974. A request for demolition was denied. In 1987 the hospital was converted into an old people's home, which never went into operation because it did not meet the legal requirements. The establishment of a hotel was approved three years later. But the plan was never implemented. In 1991 Broadfield Hospital was inscribed on the List of Endangered Listed Buildings in Scotland. Its condition has been described as vacant with the beginning of decay. In the following decades, Broadfield Hospital changed hands several times and there were several plans to continue using them, but they were never implemented. Most recently, an application for the establishment of residential units was granted in 2012. Its condition was last described this year as a ruin with a high risk.
