Broch at the Loch of Houlland

The Eshaness Broch on Loch of Houlland is located on the west side of the Esha Ness Peninsula on the Shetland island of Mainland in Scotland .

The Broch covers a small elevation that protrudes into the coastal lake "Loch of Houlland" next to a stepping stone bridge that leads to a larger island in the lake. The significantly disturbed Broch structure is largely buried under its rubble. The average diameter is around 17.1 m and the wall thickness is 4.5 m. In the north and northeast the wall stands up to a height of about 3.6 m. The access is in the southwest. A guard cell ( English guard-cell ) full of debris, located right in the hallway and there is fragmentary evidence of a gallery in the north and east, but no other visible design features.

Three section walls of an inland Promontory fort run over the headland at regular intervals . Not all of them are necessarily contemporary with the brochure. The innermost one is about three feet high and has stones only on the outside, while the other two are made of large stones. The outer one was originally a rough wall with a base of very large stones, in some cases up to 0.9 m high. An approximately 1.5 m wide entrance runs diagonally through the two outer walls and over the inner wall. There also seems to have been a rough wall around the foothills on the lake side. There are traces of prehistoric outbuildings in front of the broch and again at the neck of the peninsula on the north side.

To the south are the Broch Sea Breck and the Burnt Mound on the Loch of Breckon.
