With the delivery of the first machines for the automated riveting of aircraft components, the company established itself in the aviation industry between 1980 and 2000 and expanded into the USA, Europe and Asia. In 2003, the Claas Group bought the company and Broetje-Automation GmbH expanded its product repertoire to include riveting machines and joining stations and final assembly lines. In 2006 the subsidiary Broetje Automation-USA, Inc. was founded.

In 2012, the company acquired the company shares back from CLAAS KGaA mbH together with Deutsche Beteiligungs AG. It also changed the previously existing spelling Brötje-Automation for the international market to Broetje-Automation.

In the following year, the subsidiaries BA Services GmbH and BA UK Ltd. founded and in 2014 the subsidiaries BA Assembly & Turnkey Systems GmbH, BA Composites GmbH and Compose2Compete GmbH. Broetje-Automation also took over the “Aircraft and Technology Systems” division of the Dürr Group.

In 2015, the Wiefelstede and Jaderberg locations were merged into the new company headquarters in Rastede and the subsidiary BA Japan KK was founded. In 2016, the Chinese Shanghai Electric Group (SEC) took over the company.
