history

Brooks Automation was founded in 1978. In 2002 Brooks Automation, Inc. completed the acquisition of Intelligent Automation Systems, Inc. of Cambridge, Massachusetts, a custom automation company providing technologies and products for the semiconductor, photonics and life science industries. Brooks Automation acquired the Celigo automated cell cytometer line of products from Cyntellect, Inc. in 2011. In the same year Brooks acquired Nexus Biosystems, a manufacturer of mix and sample management systems. The following year, the company acquired intangible assets from Intevac, Inc. In October 2012, Brooks Automation entered into an agreement to acquire Crossing Automation Inc. In April 2014, an agreement followed to sell the Granville-Phillips division to MKS Instruments. Brooks completed the sale of Granville-Phillips to MKS Instruments on May 30, 2014. In 2017, Brooks acquired 4titude, a manufacturer of scientific tools and consumables, while Brooks acquired GENEWIZ, a genomics service provider, in 2018 as part of the expansion of its life science division.

Brooks Automation mainly offers four types of equipment: semiconductor automation and life science systems, gas analysis and vacuum measurement, cryopumps, cryofillers and compressors, asset tracking systems. The company specializes in the development and construction of the handling system and the associated technology. Automation products are used to support both atmospheric and vacuum-based processes, while the company's focus remains on improving performance and productivity. The company supplies vacuum pumps and instruments to maintain the constant pressure of the known process gas.
