history

The street was named after John Broome - a former New York City councilor who was Lieutenant Governor of New York in 1804 .

In the mid-20th century, Broome Street was proposed as the street for the Lower Manhattan Expressway , which would have replaced the street with a 10-lane urban freeway, which would also have destroyed all the buildings on the north side of the street.
