A bread pot is a traditional storage vessel for unpacked bread that has been turned from wood or is similar to a Roman pot . Its function is to keep the bread fresh for several days and to protect it from mold . A traditional variant is made from the wood of Swiss stone pine .

The stone pine grows from a height of approx. 1300 m in the Alps and was originally used by Swiss mountain farmers. In Switzerland, the stone pine is also called Swiss stone pine. In the recent past, however, some woodturners in Bavaria and Tyrol have also specialized in the production of stone pine bread pots. The effect of preventing mold in these bread pots is said to be based on the essential oils in the wood.

For at least 200 years, this household item has also been made from clay, burned into stoneware and glazed with salt.

  • Material: The bread pot is made from clay, salt and dyes. The salt-glazed stoneware has been known for centuries for the storage of all kinds of food. The most famous products are: lard pot, rum pot and fermentation pot .
  • Appearance: Traditionally made in "blue-gray", there are numerous variants today.
  • Quality: A bread pot is traditionally hand-made. Clay fired at 1250 ° C ( sintered ) closes its pores and becomes stone-like. That is why these products are called stoneware. Moisture is no longer absorbed even without the glaze.
  • Care: A bread pot can be cleaned with vinegar water.
