Wooden bread box with rolling mechanism and drawer

A bread box is a container , mostly for use in the kitchen - a box for holding and storing loaves of bread . The bread box common in Germany is made of sheet metal, plastic or wood, about 40 cm wide, 20 to 30 cm deep and 15 to 20 cm high - large enough to hold a 1000 gram loaf of bread. Bread boxes are often rounded at the top edge of the front and can be opened with the help of a folding or rolling mechanism. Originally, such containers were also likely to have served to protect against food pests such as the house mouse . Today, when it comes to use, the focus is on the wish that the bread should stay fresh longer.

variants

In some households, a plastic bag is simply used as a "bread box". Bread keeps the longest in an unglazed clay pot , such as a Roman pot . Electrically operated bread boxes create a vacuum in which the bread should keep fresh for a particularly long time. Some bread boxes with a rolling mechanism have a shallow drawer under a grid on which the bread is placed to catch any falling crumbs. All bread storage containers should be washed regularly with vinegar to reduce mold spores .

Others

“Brotkasten” is also the colloquial nickname for the C64 and VC20 home computers from Commodore , as their older housing variants are similar to one.
