Broviac catheter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Broviac catheter is a thin, small-lumen and flexible catheter made of silicone . It is comparable to the Hickman catheter . Both are mostly used as long-term venous catheters.

characterization

In common parlance, a Broviac catheter is a thin central venous catheter (CVC) made of silicone with an outer diameter of up to 7  CH for the administration of low-viscosity medication preparations or infusions . Hickman catheters are large-lumen (CVC) catheters made of silicone with an outer diameter of 9.6 CH. These catheters are used for the administration of high-viscosity solutions such as. B. used for parenteral nutrition.

The implantation and use as a central venous catheter is almost identical for both catheter variants. In the early days, the name was used to differentiate between the catheter lumen and the intended use. Due to the variety of products available nowadays, the terms Broviac and Hickman catheters are often used as a uniform term in the form of Broviac / Hickman catheters without further differentiation. However, they only refer to central venous catheters made of silicone. Catheters made of polyurethane (PUR) are now also available as a modern alternative material quality. In the specific application, both material variants have their advantages and disadvantages.

history

The first long-term venous catheters became available in 1968, the design was by Broviac et al. Improved in the early 1970s. Broviac used instead of the previously common catheters made of polyethylene, those made of soft and flexible silicone. He first used this material quality in 1970 as a CVC for parenteral nutrition . Broviac does not provide specific size information on diameter and inner diameter (lumen) in its publication, but Hickman et al. later that he (Hickman) used a larger inner diameter (given by Hickman as ID 0.32 mm) than the silicone catheters with an inner diameter of 0.22 mm that were generally in use until then.
