Browne Falls

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Browne Falls are a waterfall on Doubtful Sound in Fiordland National Park on the South Island of New Zealand .

The waterfall lies in an area covered with temperate rainforest and falls in a cascade into a fjord at Hall Arm .

Depending on the source, heights of 619 m or 836 m are given. This difference results from whether the difference in height from the lake from which the fall originates or only the height of the cascade is used. The source and estuary are about 1 km apart.

The watercourse is Lake Browne , a tarn (glacial lake) whose water level is 836 m above sea level. When it is filled, it overflows over the edge of the rock , similar to the Sutherland Falls .

The Browne Falls are one of two candidates for the title of New Zealand's tallest waterfall. The other is another tarn behind Elizabeth Island , also in Fiordland . There are two other large waterfalls in Doubtful Sound itself, Helena Falls and Lady Alice Falls .
