BuchBasel is a book and literature festival with an international, comprehensive claim. A wide range of events are to be presented - from new publications and political debates to innovative and young formats. The Swiss Book Prize launched in collaboration with the Swiss Association of Booksellers and Publishers is awarded at the BuchBasel Festival . The sponsorship of the festival is the association «LiteraturBasel».

The International Book and Literature Festival BuchBasel goes back to the “Basel Literature Festival” initiated in 1997 by Matthyas Jenny . In 2003, Jenny was able to win over Swiss Exhibition AG for the launch of a book and media fair taking place parallel to the festival, which took place every spring in the exhibition halls until 2007. Due to economic considerations, Swiss Exhibition declined to continue holding the event in its halls in the same year. With a changed concept, it was continued in the following years under the names "BucH.08" and "BucH.09". At the beginning of 2010, the board of directors of LiteraturBasel transferred the overall management of the book fair and the international book and literature festival to Felix Werner, who had developed the new concept together with Egon Ammann and had been responsible for the operational implementation of BuchBasel since 2008. Katrin Eckert, director of the Literaturhaus Basel, was responsible for the festival program. In 2010 and 2011, BuchBasel returned to the exhibition halls (without the participation of Swiss Exhibition AG). In 2012, the BuchBasel part of the fair had to be abandoned for financial reasons. Since then, the festival has taken place in various locations in the city of Basel.
