Matthyas Jenny
Matthyas Jenny (born June 14, 1945 in Basel ) is a Swiss author , publisher and literary activist.
Live and act
Matthyas Jenny is the founder of the first German-language poetry telephone, in 1976 in Basel, founder of the “Tag der Poesie”, on the last Saturday of March, owner of the publishing house Nachtmaschine, founder of the Basel International Literature Festival (1997) and the Basel International Poetry Festival (2001 ) and is the initiator of the BuchBasel book fair (2003).
During the Warhol Factory's time in 1970, John Giorno ran the “Call a poem” project in the Museum of Modern Art . Matthyas Jenny took over the idea and ran the first German-language poetry telephone in Basel from 1976 to 1982. He gave it away to Zurich, where it was run for another four years by PK Wehrli and Werner Bucher, editors of the literary magazine “Orte”. At present there are poetry, literature or poetry telephones in Austria, the FRG and Switzerland , e.g. B. in Kiel, East Friesland, Frankfurt and Ulm.
The "Day of Poetry" was held annually by Matthyas Jenny from 1979 to 1988 in Basel, Sarnen, Liestal, Zurich, Bern, St. Gallen, Kassel, Hamburg a. a. On the “day of poetry” a “tree of poetry” was planted at the same time.
At the Nachtmaschine publishing house, which was given this name because Matthyas Jenny could only work at night because he was a single parent with his children Zoë and Caspar during the day, more than 150 titles had been published by 2006, including books by Hansjörg Schneider , prose by Jürgen Ploog , two volumes of stories by Jörg Fauser and René Schweizer . He published his own texts a. a. in the political-satirical magazine Der Metzger and in the now legendary literary magazine Gasolin 23 , published by Jürgen Ploog, Walter Hartmann, Carl Weissner and Jörg Fauser.
Since November 2006, Matthyas Jenny has been running “Das kleine Literaturhaus Basel” together with Ursula Wernle. He designed the Literaturhaus Basel project as early as 1997 , which was then implemented by the Christoph Merian Foundation Basel in April 2000. In contrast to the Literaturhaus Basel, "Das Kleine Literaturhaus Basel" is completely independent and privately owned by the owners Matthyas Jenny and Ursula Wernle († May 13, 2007). From May 29, 2007 until autumn 2015 he ran what he claims to be the smallest bookstore in Basel, the " Bachletten Buchhandlung". Matthyas Jenny has since resigned as director of the International Literature Festival.
Matthyas Jenny is the father of the writer Zoë Jenny and the poet and painter Caspar Jenny .
