Boxes made of wood or metal are referred to as book cases, in which books were kept in the Middle Ages that did not have a wooden cover but were bound as a paperback .

Later, valuable books were also stored in lavishly furnished book cases. A well-known example is the book case of the Uta Codex from the beginning of the 11th century.
