Humpback grave

A humpback grave is an early form of urn burial. With this form of burial, the urn was no longer placed freely in the sand, but covered with a small mound. By removing the soil for the cover, a circular moat was created next to the hill with the urn, which marks the burial site. Cemeteries with humpback graves (humpback grave fields) can only be found in eastern Lower Saxony. Well-known humpback burial grounds are near Boltersen , Bad Bevensen and Lüneburg-Oedeme .
