Buffalo Springs, Dallam County
Buffalo Springs is a ranch in Dallam County, Texas .
It is located about 45 kilometers northwest of Dalhart's administrative headquarters in the Rita Blanca National Grassland not far from the state border between Texas and Oklahoma.
The name suggests the water-rich headwaters in which the ranch is located. From the beginning of the 17th century the area served Indians as a camp and hunting ground. Later there was a cattle trough here. From 1878 on, Buffalo Springs was the first headquarters of the XIT Ranch , one of the largest cattle ranches ever to operate in the United States.
Because of the use of irrigation systems, the water output from the springs fell from 142 liters / second in 1907 to 6.5 liters / second in 1977.
