The Bufuka peninsula

Bufuka is a village on the east coast of Lake Bunyonyi , in the Kitumba region, seven kilometers outside the city of Kabale , in southwest Uganda . This village is home to 350 people, mostly Bakiga tribe, and three islands are under its administration.

AIDS brought great suffering to Bufuka. The cause of the outbreak was an employee of the Uganda Railway from Bufuka. Many men followed him into town to find work and brought the disease back with them. Today mostly older women and orphans live in Bufuka.

Among the lake towns, Bufuka is closest to the district capital, Kabale, so tourists first came to Bufuka - the first hotel was built as early as 1960. Today the building is in ruins but there are now five other hotels in Bufuka.

The market, which takes place twice a week, is held in the Rutindo market area. The central place of the village is a peninsula on which the Protestant church is located. Bufuka Elementary School, which started in 1938, was an offshoot of the Church.
