Bulla ossea

As Bulla osseous (plural bullae osseae) responsible for are whales typical mergers of ear capsule of temporal bone and tympanic referred to as a bubble-shaped Knochenauftreibung ( "Hearing bubble") with the skulls themselves are only loosely connected by ligaments and embedded in connective and fatty tissue. They play a role in conducting sound in the whales' hearing .

After death, these bullae can loosen and are fossilized as cetolites . Accordingly, they are often found as isolated bone fragments.
