Millstone with memorial inscription at the Aabachsee

The Bumbam mill used to stand in the area of the Aatal near Bad Wünnenberg between the places Bleiwasher and Fürstenberg . Today the remains of the mill lie on the bottom of the Aabachsee . The remains of the mill can still be seen from the bank when the tide is low. On the western bank of the reservoir there is a memorial for the mill with the old millstone of the Bumbam mill.

history

Bronze plaque: "Millstone of the Bumbams Mill - built in 1628 - location 400 m to the west - overflowed in 1979"

The mill was built from lead wash by Johann Pieper . Bishop Clemens August from Cologne gave him the first permit to build a grinding mill. He built the first mill at an unsuitable point and so he moved to the Aatal in 1746. There he got a building permit for a water mill and a windmill, but they were not built. The miller Franz Müller complained about the construction of the water mill because he feared competition from the mill. Some Bad Wünnenberg citizens joined this because they too saw their grazing rights restricted. The lawsuit was won by Johann Pieper. But he was forbidden to pass the mill off as a compulsory mill. The mill remained in the possession of the Pieper family until the 20th century. In 1975 it had to give way to the Aabachsee.

Naming

According to a written record, a Swede named Grumburn had rebuilt a ruined mill after the Thirty Years War . The name was corrupted by the lead wash farmers in Bumbam .
