The Association of Engineers for Water Management, Waste Management and Cultural Building eV (BWK) is a professional association of engineers and natural scientists in water management , waste management and cultural building .

The association was founded in 1904 as a public representative of active engineers in the water industry. The BWK is now a professional association of engineers and natural scientists such as biologists , chemists , hydrologists, physicists , technicians and other specialists from research and teaching, public administration and the private sector. Last but not least, with students from various disciplines, they set the content and goals of their work jointly and cooperatively and thus make a significant contribution to meaningful progress.

With its 10 regional associations and around 3500 members from all over Germany, the BWK is active in environmental protection , contributes to solving technical and scientific tasks, gives members the opportunity for professional and personal further education at courses, conferences and seminars and represents the interests of the association nationwide in various committees, associations and bodies.

The BWK wants to promote the professional advancement of its members and be the mouthpiece for clear positions and positions of its members. The determination of position refers not only to topics from the entire subject area, but also to the social and political environment of its members.

The organ of the association is called Water and Waste and is a trade journal with topics in the field of environment, energy and law and is published by Springer Fachmedien . The BWK regional associations of Hesse / Rhineland-Palatinate / Saarland, Lower Saxony / Bremen and Schleswig-Holstein / Hamburg are members of the central association of engineering associations .

The 10 independent BWK regional associations are organized in the BWK federal association, which advocates common interests and summarizes organizational tasks. The President of the BWK Federal Association has been Holger Schüttrumpf since 2015 and the Federal Managing Director Catrina Brüll, both from the Chair and Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management at RWTH Aachen University. Vice-president and technical-scientific coordinator is Birgit Schlichtig, member of the Stuttgart regional council, Ref. 54.3 Industry / Municipalities, focus on wastewater. The new federal treasurer elected in 2017 is Thomas Ströer, managing director of the district association of water and soil associations in the old district of Wesermünde. The federal office is in Aachen.

The BWK is divided into 10 regional associations, which in turn are divided into 56 district groups. The BWK regional associations assume the functions

  • To carry out advanced training events at the state and district group level,
  • to represent the social affairs of the members at state level and
  • To develop statements on current technical and scientific issues and legislative proposals at state level.

The BWK regional associations and district groups organize around 200 specialist conferences, courses, seminars as well as one to multi-day excursions and courses with a total of over 5,000 participants annually. These events deal in particular with issues that are relevant at the state and regional level.
