The Federal Research Center for Fisheries (BFAFi) carried out application- related , multidisciplinary research in the field of fisheries and related sciences on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection .

The work served as a decision-making aid for the federal fisheries policy , in particular in negotiations in the international fisheries conventions and for bilateral agreements as well as in questions of the use and protection of Antarctic animal populations and global whale protection . The task was to support the federal government in preserving the biological and genetic resources of the sea and inland waterways in their diversity and ensuring their usability in the long term.

On January 1, 2008, three of the institute's remaining institutes (Institute for Sea Fisheries and Institute for Fisheries Ecology in Hamburg, Institute for Baltic Sea Fisheries in Rostock) were integrated into the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute - Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forests and Fisheries , the fourth (Institute for Fishery Technology and Fisheries Economics in Hamburg) dissolved.
