The Federal Association of Wind Farm Operators Offshore eV (BWO) is a professional association for companies that plan, build and operate wind farms in Germany . The association's office is located in Berlin-Mitte. Uwe Knickrehm has been managing director since it was founded in 2015, and Stefan Thimm succeeded him at the beginning of 2020.

history

At the beginning of 2015, the predecessor organization Arbeitsgemeinschaft Offshore-Windenergie was founded by twelve operating companies. Until the end of 2014, these companies were organized under the umbrella of the Offshore Wind Energy Foundation in the Operators working group. The foundation of the association served to optimize the previous work structure and to secure it under antitrust law.

In 2018, the Offshore Wind Energy Association was renamed the Federal Association of Wind Farm Operators Offshore eV (BWO).

Tasks and activities

The Federal Association of Wind Farm Operators Offshore wants to pool the experience and skills of its members and derives political recommendations for action from this. According to the statutes, the association has the task of actively promoting the expansion of wind energy at sea ( offshore wind energy ) in the Federal Republic of Germany or in other countries of the European Union . The association should also promote the industry-wide exchange on technical and legal issues with the aim of making a lasting contribution to the cost-effective and sustainable energy supply from offshore wind turbines.

For this purpose, the previous developments in offshore wind energy are to be evaluated and possible consequences of future framework conditions analyzed. For the success of the energy transition, the association advocates a permit and infrastructure framework that enables the economically cost-efficient expansion of offshore wind energy.

Members

The members of the BWO include large energy providers as well as small and medium-sized companies that only operate one wind farm. With the entry of Parkwind NV - KNK Wind in February 2019, the BWO will again represent all existing and planned offshore wind farms in Germany.
