The umbrella organization consists of seven regional associations, in which a total of around 1,500 members are organized. Some regional associations cover the territory of several German states . The Federal Association of Judges in Commercial Matters is also a member of the DVS as a professional association . The chairman of the DVS is Andreas Höhne, the managing director is Sabahittin Yarici and the treasurer is Mathias Kruse.

Membership is not acquired directly from the umbrella organization, but through membership in the regional associations. A full member can be anyone who is or was active as an honorary judge in criminal jurisdiction ( lay judge ), civil jurisdiction ( commercial judge , agricultural judge ), labor , social , financial or administrative jurisdiction. Other natural or legal persons can acquire sustaining membership.

Tasks and activities

The DVS pursues the goal in particular of spreading the idea of ​​the participation of the people in the case law . In addition, he supports the honorary judges in the exercise of their office, for example through educational offers. He publishes the membership magazine Richter ohne Robe .

The DVS has successfully campaigned for the case law of the Federal Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights on the information rights of lay judges to be implemented in practice. This establishes the lay judges' right to inspect the files, in particular the charges and the main results of the investigation.

The association is involved as an expert association in legislative projects that directly or indirectly affect the honorary judges .
