Bungei (magazine)

Bungei ( Japanese 文藝 ) is a magazine for literature and fiction that has been published since 1930. The magazine was first published in 1930 by Kaizōsha Verlag. In 1944, the Kawade Shobō Verlag took over the magazine. When the publisher was renamed Kawade Shobō Shinsha in 1957, the magazine was initially discontinued. Five years later, in 1962, the Bungei was reissued and published monthly until 1980. It has been published quarterly since 1980.

The publisher has been awarding the Bungei Prize ( 文藝 賞 , Bungeishō ) every November since the new edition in 1962 . The current editor-in-chief has been Ikezawa Natsuki since 2011.

The Bungei belongs next to Gunzō ( 群像 ), Shinchō ( 新潮 ), Bungakukai ( 文學界 ) and Subaru ( す ば る ) to the 5 major literary magazines in Japan.
