Bunny Chow

Bunny Chow

A bunny chow , often also called a bunny , is a specialty of South African cuisine . It consists of a halved (sometimes quartered) white bread loaf that is hollowed out and filled with a spicy curry dish made from beef , lamb , chicken or beans. Traditionally, the bunny is eaten with the hands by first dipping the inside of the loaf that has been taken out into the curry dish and then eating the outsides soaked with sauce. A side dish is often served with a salad made from grated onions, carrots, chilli and white cabbage, which is also eaten mixed with the curry.

Emergence

It is certain that the food originated in the large Indian community in Durban in the 1940s . Bunny Chow is also offered in other South African cities. The name Bunny Chow is said to have been derived from Bania , the name of an Indian caste also called Vania. The Bania were bankers and spice and grain traders. During the apartheid era , Indians were forbidden to enter restaurants reserved for whites, so enterprising restaurateurs sold transportable dishes through their shop windows or the back doors of restaurants. The traditional Indian roti bread was not suitable for transport because it was too soft, so white bread was used. Another theory about the genesis of the dish is that it was introduced by Indian golf caddies who ate it during their lunch breaks on the golf course. Today, bunny chow is served as street food to take away, but also in restaurants, and is considered a South African specialty.
