The Burdizzo pliers are a veterinary instrument for the so-called bloodless castration of male cattle , sheep and goats . The effectiveness is based on a strong squeezing of the spermatic cords . This process causes permanent damage to the testicular artery ( arteria testicularis ) running in the respective spermatic cord, leading to a reduction ( atrophy ) of the testicle and, after 2-3 weeks, to infertility. According to Section 5, Paragraph 3, No. 1 of the Animal Welfare Act , cattle, sheep and goats under four weeks old may be castrated without stunning.
