The Donnerschwee Castle is an abandoned Niederungsburg in the Oldenburg district of Donnerschwee in Lower Saxony from the 11th century.
construction
A description from 1844 stated that the castle site was raised on a pasture and was surrounded by a double moat, at that time stone foundations were still visible. The Burgplatz could still be seen on an aerial photo from 1952 and was about 30 × 40 meters in size.
history
The first mention of the Lords of Donnerschwee was in 1237. The family was a branch of the Lords of Bremen, proven since 1159. The noble family died in 1398/99 with the canon Gerhard von Bremen. The Lords of Schagen were the heirs to the property. Friedrich von Schagen sold his share of the castle to Count Moritz von Oldenburg in 1399 . Ingeborg, the count's daughter, used the complex as a residence when she was expelled from Aurich after her husband Ocko tom Brok was captured . The castle was last mentioned in 1436 when it was pledged to Dietrich von Bardewisch. The Rasteder Chronik states that the castle was destroyed by the people of Bremen in 1464. In 1817 the parcel there was called "Borgwall", in 1844 the name "Bollwerk" is found.
