Horkenstein Castle
Horkenstein Castle was the name of a hotel-restaurant near Dahlhausen . It was located on the Ruhr heights on the right side of the Ruhr .
history
The house was built in 1900.
The building included a large dining room for the restaurant with space for up to 1000 people and an observation tower; the retaining walls of the terrace were provided with battlements , which gave the impression that it was a former castle. The name was based on the Horkenstein , which at that time was already in the Hattinger city area.
In the period before the First World War , donkeys with guides were offered on the river to take day trippers up the footpath from the lido on the Ruhr to the “castle”. In the Lewackerstraße area there was a tunnel dug into the saddle that served as a restaurant.
Horkenstein Castle was a common motif on postcards. The property has been rebuilt several times. It was last used as a homeless shelter and was demolished in 1960. The masonry of the terrace is still preserved today.
