history
The castle was built on a hill on a peninsula that protrudes into the bay of Morie ( 守 江湾 , Morie-wan ). It was protected by the rivers Takayama ( 高 山川 , Takayama-kawa ) in the north and Yasaka ( 八 坂 川 , Yasaka-kawa ) in the south. Originally, the medieval castle of the Kitsuki clan belonging to the -tomo rulership was spelled like this, namely " 木 付 ".
When the Ōtomo lost their power as a result of the Korean War , the lord of the castle, Kitsuki Shigenao ( 木 付 鎮 直 ; 1528–1593) , took himself as their follower . the life with which this family died out.
After the Kitsuki, Maeda Gen'i ( 前 田 玄 以 ; 1539–1602) took over the castle, who modernized it. Then Sugihara Nagafusa ( 杉原 長 房 ; 1574–1629) became lord of the castle, who expanded the castle to the west at the foot of the hill. This is where the residence was built and a samurai quarter was laid out.
After Tokugawa Ieyasu had taken over Japan in 1600, Kitsuki became a side castle of the Hosokawa, who set up Matsui Yasuyuki ( 松井 康 之 ; 1550-1612) and Ariyoshi Tatsuyuki ( 有 吉 立 行 ; 1559-1608) as administrators. The castle then came to a branch line of the Ogasawara and finally to the Nomi branch of the Matsudaira.
The castle consisted of the upper area on the hill, which was divided into four sub-areas, here called Sanjō-no-kaku ( 山上 の 郭 ) 1 to 4. The hill, surrounded on three sides by water, was protected to the west by a moat. In the lower area were the Gotemba ( 御 殿 場 ) and Nishi-goten ( 西 御 殿 ) residences with an area for horse stables in between.
In 1712 the spelling changed from " 木 付 " to " 杵 築 " due to a spelling mistake by the Shogunate . After the Meiji restoration , the castle fell into disrepair, but in 1970 the outer shape of the castle tower was rebuilt on the castle hill. Part of the samurai district still exists in its old form. The castle hill ( shiroyama ) is now the Shiroyama Park ( 城 山 公園 , Shiroyama-kōen ). On the west side is the Seien Shrine ( 青 筵 神社 , Seien -jinja ).
