Nakagusuku Castle

The Nakagusuku Castle ( Japanese 中 城城 Nakagusuku-jō , Okinawaisch: Nakagusiku ) is a Japanese castle ruin in the small town of Nakagusuku in Okinawa Prefecture . It is one of the oldest castles on the Ryūkyū Islands .

history

It was built by Prince Gosamaru around 1440 and was Okinawa's second largest castle after Shuri-jō . After a dispute between Gosamaru and Shō Hashi , however, it was destroyed and not rebuilt.

After the Second World War , the ruins were restored and are now one of the better preserved castle ruins in Japan. The drywall consists of roughly hewn stones that were piled up to ten meters high. The Nakagusuku Castle is a typical example of a Gusuku , which has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2000 as "Archaeological Sites of the Kingdom of the Ryūkyū Islands " .
